Km. 284 Puerto Barrios, IzabalGuatemala Central América History of Garments In the precolumbian period the Mayan used for their ceremonial Customes: Quetzal feathers, Shells, jade, jewerely, jaguar skin, sculpted bones anple turban or hairdo, but very few textiles. All was focused in their religion through mythological animals or sacred elements, such as plants: cocoa… astronomical symbol: sun, moon… After the conquest, the spaniards brought new fibers, new fabric techniques, that transformed the Mayan clothing, and through the new Christian religion a mixture of cultures was created, having as a result the present day garments. At the beginning they were plain, but they were extremely changed since 1970. Before that date, each important town from the highlands of Guatemala had their own custome suit, that helped recognize each ethny; we actually arrived to see an every day custome, full of richness never seen before. The high price of a custome suit, the chemical coloring, the cultural loss, the religious changes, the development of communications, the import of Asian products, and the tourism taste adjustment, are all reasons that make us live a color and design explotion that complicate the acknowledgement of the origin of each town. We can actually observe an outerlimited creativity, but also a loss of cultural identification of some towns. Custome Description These customes are weaving in 3 types of looms: Waist, foot, and ribbon looms. Detail of items they use with the Mayan names.
